The Tale of Akane Shadowreed – Bloodreed Ronin
In the Land of Reeds, the tall stalks bend with the wind but never break. They taught Akane patience. They taught her that true strength hides in stillness.
Born to a minor samurai house wiped out in the Shattering’s pointless clan wars, Akane became a wandering ronin — a sword-for-hire who answered to no lord. She earned a quiet reputation for her iaijutsu: standing motionless with blade sheathed until the exact moment to strike. Travelers named her “the Reed That Waits.”
When whispers reached her of a hidden Realm of Shadow, she stepped through the withered arm in Mohgwyn Palace. In the Gravesite Plain, only minutes after arrival, she found the massive Great Katana resting beside a fallen warrior. The moment her hands closed around the hilt, the blade drank from her. A crimson curse — the blood of the Shadow Realm itself — flooded her veins. The reeds of her homeland had followed her here, but now they were stained red.
Instead of resisting, Akane embraced the curse.
She discovered she could enter the Overhead Stance, holding the great blade high in perfect stillness — the same patient pose she once used with her uchigatana. The blood within her now ignites a red glow when she equips Rellana’s Cameo, turning her patient wait into devastating release. Lord of Blood’s Exultation surges through her with every bleed proc, and Shard of Alexander lets the stance skill strike with legendary weight.
She claimed the blood-soaked Rakshasa Set from a fallen champion in the Shadow Realm — its deep red plates and dried blood splatter now mirror the curse that runs through her own veins. The Sacrificial Axe she carries on her hip is a grim necessity: every life the Great Katana takes feeds her FP so the curse can keep burning. Her old Wakizashi remains at her side for quick parries, a reminder of who she once was.
Even her smallest tools bear the curse. She now carries cursed Kukri — curved throwing blades stained by the same blood that runs through her veins — so that even her first distant strikes feed the curse before the Great Katana delivers the final cut. The wild Lone Wolves and the restless Skeletal Militiamen were drawn to her by that same curse — beasts and fallen warriors that now fight beside the Bloodreed Ronin as if the reeds themselves have come alive to aid her.
Now Akane Shadowreed walks the Realm of Shadow not seeking lords or grace, but only worthy opponents… and the next perfect moment of stillness before the reed bends and cuts.
“The reed bends… then cuts.”
