Vesperax — The Hornsent Bound

Vesperax — The Hornsent Bound

The Evening Light

Build #6 in Series | Level 175 | Hero Origin |
Somber +10 / Smithing +25 | Disrobed Dragon Cult Purist

Status: Draft — Pending Approval

Build Summary

Level 175. Hero origin. Eighty Faith, fifty-five Vigor. No armor,
no shield, no poise. She transforms into an ancient dragon and calls
down red lightning until everything in front of her stops moving.
Flowerstone Gavel applies the debuff. Gravel Stone Seal handles the
casting. Seven-step pre-engagement sequence, twenty-second kill
window, stamina is the real bottleneck. This is a burst mage with a
transformation mechanic. Play it like one.

Derived Stats

Poise 0 No armor. Zero poise. Cannot trade.
Equip Load ~10.6 total weight Light — well under medium threshold
HP ~1900 at 55 VIG (soft cap at 60)
FP 221 at 38 MND. Flask restores 220 (1 FP short of full pool)
Stamina ~135 at 23 END. Tight budget — charged KLS costs 29.6% of pool
Incant Scaling 318 Gravel Stone Seal +25 at 80 FAI (in-game verified)

Faith 80 hits the hard cap for incantation scaling. All Dragon Cult
spells unlocked. Arcane 15 meets the Flowerstone Gavel requirement
and nothing else — this is not a Dragon Communion build. DEX 20
plus Radagon Icon gives 50 effective DEX for casting speed, short
of the 70 cap but a noticeable gain. Endurance 23 is tight on
purpose — every stat point went toward Faith and survival. The
stamina budget is unforgiving but manageable if you respect it.

Equipment

Main Hand — Flowerstone Gavel +10 [DLC]

Flowerstone Gavel +10 — SKILL VEHICLE

Class Hammer Damage Type Pierce (melee)
Scaling (+10) STR C / DEX D / ARC C Weight 6.0
Requirements STR 14 | DEX 8 | ARC 15
Skill Flower Dragonbolt — 18 FP

“Stone hammer shaped like an ancient dragon flower.
Used by the Dragon Communion Priestess.”

Melee AR is low. R2 swings are for trash mobs or FP exhaustion
only. The entire reason this weapon exists in the build is the
Flower Dragonbolt skill — a chargeable lightning debuff that
strips 17% lightning negation off the target for 20 seconds.
Activate the skill, then swap to the seal and dump spells
during the debuff window. Passive bonus: +30% melee damage vs
Dragon types, +15% vs Ancient Dragons. This applies to melee
attacks only — does NOT apply to the Flower Dragonbolt skill.
Cannot be infused with Ashes of War. Cannot be enchanted with
Magic or consumables.

Off Hand — Gravel Stone Seal +25 [BASE GAME]

Gravel Stone Seal +25

Type Sacred Seal Weight 1.5
Requirements STR 4 | FAI 18 Scaling STR E / FAI C
Incant Scaling 318 (at +25 / 80 FAI) Passive +15% Dragon Cult Incantations

“Sacred seal made from gravel stone tile from Leyndell.
Enhances Dragon Cult incantations of the capital’s ancient
dragon cult.”

This is the casting tool. Weapon swap to it after applying
Flower Dragonbolt from the Gavel. The +15% Dragon Cult boost
applies to every spell in the rotation — Lightning Spear,
Knight’s Lightning Spear, Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike,
Honed Bolt, all of them. Incant scaling of 318 at +25 / 80 FAI
verified in-game. Not web-extractable from Fextralife upgrade
table, but community data points (293 at 66 FAI, 343 at 99 FAI)
are consistent with this value.

Armor Set — None

Slot Piece Poise Weight Notes
Helm None 0 0 Priestess Heart requires disrobed state
Chest None 0 0 Dragon form replaces armor
Gauntlets None 0 0
Greaves None 0 0
Total 0 0 Zero poise. Cannot trade hits. Every attack interrupts casting.

Not an optimization choice. Not a challenge run aesthetic. The
Priestess Heart transformation requires a disrobed state — no
armor, no exceptions. The dragon form IS the armor. Base dragon
form stats plus the negation buffs from Priestess Heart,
Dragonbolt of Florissax, Opaline Hardtear, and Dragoncrest
Greatshield Talisman are the only damage mitigation layers.
Survivable. Unforgiving.

Transformation Tool — Priestess Heart [DLC]

Priestess Heart

First Use Transforms body to Ancient Dragon form (permanent until death)
Second Use Activates buff while in dragon form (60 sec, no FP cost)
Requirement Must be disrobed (no armor equipped)

“The petrified heart of a Dragon Communion Priestess.
The priestess gave her own form to serve her lord.”

Two functions, one item. First use transforms — this is your
armor now. Second use while transformed activates the buff:
+20% Dragon Cult Incantation damage, +7% all damage negation,
+70 all resistances. Duration 60 seconds. NOT affected by
Old Lord’s Talisman. Does NOT boost Dragon Communion
incantations — Dragon Cult only. NOT an aura buff — stacks
with both Dragonbolt of Florissax and Golden Vow (different
buff categories). Refresh at 60 seconds during prolonged fights.

Spirit Ash — Ancient Dragon Florissax [DLC]

Ancient Dragon Florissax

Effect: Summons the priestess herself for combat.
When Dragonbolt of Florissax is active, both caster and summon
are shrouded in the same red lightning aura.

Not just a thematic choice. Florissax draws aggro, giving you
windows to commit to charged casts. Pair with Dragonbolt of
Florissax for the shared defensive aura.

Talismans

1. Godfrey Icon [BASE GAME]

Effect: +15% attack power for charged spells and skills

Boosts four things in this build: Lightning Spear, Knight’s
Lightning Spear, Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike, and Flower
Dragonbolt (skill). Does NOT boost Fortissax’s Lightning Spear,
Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Spear, Honed Bolt, or Frozen Lightning
Spear — none of those can be charged. Know which is which before
committing FP.

2. Radagon Icon [BASE GAME]

Effect: Shortens casting time. Grants +30 virtual DEX for spellcasting.

Casting speed caps at 70 DEX total. At 20 base DEX + Icon =
50 effective. Noticeable improvement, not at cap. The difference
between getting a charged ADLS off and getting staggered mid-cast.

3. Lightning Scorpion Charm [BASE GAME]

Effect: +12% lightning damage

Side effect: +10% physical damage taken. This is why Dragoncrest
Greatshield is in slot 4 — it exists to offset this penalty.
With no armor, every percentage point of physical mitigation
matters. The trade is worth it. Lightning is your only damage
type.

4. Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman [BASE GAME]

Effect: 20% reduction in physical damage taken (multiplicative)

Compensates for the Lightning Scorpion penalty AND the lack of
armor. Without this, physical damage taken with the Scorpion
penalty active would be catastrophic. With it, the defensive
stack reaches ~37.4% effective physical negation — still
fragile, but functional.

Flask of Wondrous Physick

1. Opaline Hardtear [BASE GAME]

Effect: +15% all damage negation

Duration: 180 seconds (3 minutes)

2. Lightning-Shrouding Cracked Tear [BASE GAME]

Effect: +20% lightning damage

Duration: 180 seconds (3 minutes)

Drink first. The 180-second clock starts the pre-engagement sequence.
Everything else expires before this does. If the fight lasts longer
than 3 minutes and you have flask charges, drink again.

Consumables

  • None specified. Build functions entirely on FP, stamina, and the Flask of Cerulean Tears. Rune Arcs viable for boss fights if a Great Rune is equipped — not part of the core build identity.

Playstyle Notes

Burst mage with a transformation mechanic and a skill-vehicle
hammer. Apply the debuff, dump everything into nukes, back off,
reset. Stamina is the real bottleneck, not FP. A charged Knight’s
Lightning Spear costs 40 stamina — that’s 29.6% of the entire
pool. After three casts you have enough stamina for one dodge
roll or one more cast. Not both. If you’re treating this like
sustained DPS, you’re going to get hit mid-cast with no armor and
no poise.

Core Mechanics

  • Flower Dragonbolt Debuff: 17% increased lightning damage taken (charged), 12% (uncharged), 20-second duration. Always charge — the 5% difference is worth the extra second. Bug note: uses PvP values in PvE. Scales off Arcane, not Faith.
  • Priestess Heart Dual Function: First use transforms to Ancient Dragon form (permanent until death). Second use activates +20% Dragon Cult damage, +7% negation, +70 resistances (60 sec). No FP cost. Must be disrobed.
  • Buff Stacking: Priestess Heart (NOT aura) + Dragonbolt of Florissax (aura) = stack. Both active simultaneously. Dragonbolt does NOT stack with Golden Vow — doesn’t matter, you’re not using Golden Vow.
  • Combined Flower Dragonbolt Multiplier: 1.81x — Godfrey Icon (1.15) × Lightning Scorpion (1.12) × Lightning Tear (1.20) × Debuff (1.17). No Shard of Alexander in this build.
  • Defensive Stack: ~43.1% physical negation without Scorpion penalty. ~37.4% with Scorpion penalty active. No armor — these are your only mitigation layers outside of dragon form base stats.

Using main page value (35 FP) pending further verification.

All spells tagged: Dragon Cult Incantation [BASE GAME] except
Knight’s Lightning Spear [DLC — Scorpion River Catacombs, Rauh Base].

Stance Damage

Not a stance-break build. Knight’s Lightning Spear deals 5 stance
per projectile uncharged (9.25 charged). Fully charged with all
projectiles hitting, approximately 27 stance damage total — about
on par with a straight sword charged heavy, but at range. Useful
for opening stagger windows. Stance breaks aren’t the focus here.
The build opens windows — it doesn’t break doors.

Combat Loop in Practice

Pre-Engagement Sequence

Do this before every major encounter. The order matters.

  1. Drink Flask of Wondrous Physick: Opaline Hardtear (+15% negation, 3 min) + Lightning-Shrouding Cracked Tear (+20% lightning, 3 min). Longest buff window. Clock starts now.
  2. Priestess Heart — Transform: First use. Must be disrobed — you already are. Transforms to Ancient Dragon form. Permanent until death. No FP cost. Do this at grace before walking out.
  3. Priestess Heart — Buff: Second use while transformed. +20% Dragon Cult damage, +7% negation, +70 resistances. 60 seconds. Shortest buff window besides the debuff.
  4. Cast Dragonbolt of Florissax: +10% all negation, +20% guard negation. 70 seconds. Aura buff. Fast cast. 35 FP.
  5. Flowerstone Gavel — Activate Flower Dragonbolt (Charged): Apply debuff. 17% lightning vulnerability on target. 20 seconds. 18 FP. Kill window opens NOW.
  6. Switch to Gravel Stone Seal: Weapon swap. Practice the timing — should take under a second.

The 20-Second Kill Window

Everything from Step 5 onward is a race against a 20-second timer.
Here’s how to spend it.

  1. Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike (Charged) — 36 FP, 31+ stamina: Primary nuke. Godfrey Icon applies. Best against large targets — multiple bolts scatter from impact point. Position close to maximize hit count. Burn this first while stamina is full.
  2. Knight’s Lightning Spear (Charged) — 29 FP, 40 stamina: Secondary nuke. Godfrey Icon applies. Fires initial spear plus tracking spears from dragon crests. Even if staggered mid-cast, secondary spears STILL FIRE. Safest cast to commit to. 5 stance per projectile (9.25 charged), ~27 total charged.
  3. Lightning Spear (Charged) — 18 FP, 36 stamina: Filler nuke. Cheapest cast in rotation. Godfrey Icon applies. Use when stamina allows this but not KLS.
  4. Honed Bolt — 12 FP: Pressure tool. Cheapest FP cost. No Godfrey Icon boost. Chain casts after initial cast. Use for finishing wounded targets or peppering mobile bosses between openings. Bypasses shields.

Stamina Wall

After ADLS (31+ stamina) + KLS charged (40) + Lightning Spear charged
(36), you’ve spent 107+ stamina. Pool is 135. That leaves ~28 —
enough for one dodge roll (12 stamina) or one more cast. Not both.
Back off for 3 seconds. Dodge incoming attacks. Let stamina recover.
Re-enter with Honed Bolts or uncharged Lightning Spear while waiting
for debuff to expire or stamina to regen.

Buff Refresh Cycle

Time What Expires Action Priority
0:20 Flower Dragonbolt debuff Swap to Gavel, charged cast, swap back to seal Only if committing to another burst window
1:00 Priestess Heart buff Use Priestess Heart again (second use mechanic) HIGH — lost +20% Dragon Cult damage + 7% negation + 70 resistances
1:10 Dragonbolt of Florissax Recast (35 FP, fast cast) MEDIUM — recast during safe window, not mid-combat
3:00 Physick Drink again if charges remain LOW — only if fight continues. Build is survivable without it.

Variation: Mobile Bosses

Drop charged ADLS from the rotation — too slow. Spam uncharged
Lightning Spear (18 FP, fast cast). Weave Honed Bolts (12 FP)
between boss attack windows. Save KLS charged for when you KNOW
the boss has a 1+ second recovery animation. Reapply Flower
Dragonbolt debuff whenever possible — 17% vulnerability makes
uncharged spells hit significantly harder.

Variation: Surrounded / Overwhelmed

Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike is the panic button. AoE scatter
hits everything around you. Charge it and cast at your feet. Every
enemy in range takes multiple hits. Dodge OUT, not through — without
armor, trades aren’t an option.

Emergency: Out of FP

Flowerstone Gavel R1 swings. Melee AR is low. This is survival,
not damage. If a flask charge remains, drink it — 220 FP restores
roughly two full rotations.

Hidden Synergies Explained

The 1.81x Multiplier

Flower Dragonbolt benefits from four independent damage modifiers
that stack multiplicatively: Godfrey Icon (+15%), Lightning
Scorpion Charm (+12%), Lightning-Shrouding Tear (+20%), and the
debuff itself (+17% enemy vulnerability). That’s 1.15 × 1.12 ×
1.20 × 1.17 = 1.81x. No Shard of Alexander in this build. The
skill scales off Arcane, not Faith, which is why the Gavel lists
ARC C scaling and Vesperax has 15 ARC despite this being a Faith
build. Every point of that 15 serves the skill.

Priestess Heart + Dragonbolt of Florissax

Most players assume two “dragon” buffs don’t stack. They do.
Priestess Heart is a transformation buff — NOT an aura buff.
Dragonbolt of Florissax IS an aura buff. Different categories,
multiplicative stacking. Both active simultaneously in the combat
loop. Priestess Heart gives +20% Dragon Cult damage and +7%
negation. Dragonbolt gives +10% negation and +20% guard negation.
Complementary, not redundant. Fextralife confirms: “Damage buff
can stack with Golden Vow.” Since it stacks with Golden Vow (aura),
it stacks with Dragonbolt (also aura).

The Lightning Scorpion Penalty Loop

Lightning Scorpion Charm gives +12% lightning damage but +10%
physical damage taken. With no armor, that’s brutal. Dragoncrest
Greatshield Talisman (20% physical damage reduction, multiplicative)
exists specifically to offset this. Without Dragoncrest, effective
physical negation drops to ~28.9%. With it, you reach ~37.4% —
still fragile, but functional. The two talismans are paired by
necessity, not choice.

Knight’s Lightning Spear Safety Net

KLS fires secondary tracking spears from dragon crests that
activate EVEN IF YOU GET INTERRUPTED mid-cast. Every other spell
in the rotation — if you get staggered, you lose the cast, the FP,
and the stamina. Gone. KLS is the exception. The initial spear
might miss or get interrupted, but the tracking spears still fire
from the crests. This makes it the safest cast to commit to.
When you suspect you’ll get hit, use KLS, not ADLS. ADLS has no
safety net — 36 FP and 31+ stamina gone instantly if staggered.

Florissax Spirit Ash + Dragonbolt of Florissax

Thematic synergy that doubles as functional. When Dragonbolt of
Florissax is active, the red lightning aura wraps both the caster
AND the summoned Florissax spirit ash. Both receive the +10%
negation buff. Florissax also draws aggro, buying you the seconds
needed to commit to charged casts. Without a tank or shield, this
is how you buy cast windows — let the priestess take the heat
while you charge ADLS.

220 FP Flask — One Cast Short

Cerulean Flask +10 restores 220 FP. Vesperax has 221 FP. That’s
a 1 FP shortfall on full restoration. In practice this means one
less Honed Bolt (12 FP) or one less Lightning Spear (18 FP) per
flask than a perfect refill would allow. It seems trivial until
you’re counting casts in a boss fight and the math doesn’t line
up. Budget for 220, not 221.

Lore & Narrative

I. The Exile

Messmer came and Belurat burned. Many died, a few found refuge in
Belurat Tower and one ran south. Jarring roars echoed down a
mountainous valley of jagged rock the further south she ran. The
cave promised refuge until it didn’t. The horrors in the cave, dead
that live and a dragon man, made her rethink her actions but she
pressed on. The spire would never make it to heaven.

The other side of the cave flashed with red lightning and beasts
devouring each other. She found a woman who must have been
associated with the dragon man she had killed, but as she
approached, she turned with a warm welcome. Stories of her lord
and the promise of power. She only had to kill the beast atop the
mountain and then she could defeat the strumpet’s progeny that
killed her people.

II. The Priestess

Florissax, a former dragon in human form who keeps vigil for her
lord. The Hornsent understands they are not allies, but they both
have one thing in common — revenge. Florissax needs Bayle dead and
the Hornsent’s revenge relies on killing Bayle. There is only one
path. Florissax’s sleep-deprived asceticism to Placidusax promised
the power once the deed was done.

III. First Journey

Bayle is no longer and neither is Florissax. In her place, a
withered heart and a peculiar weapon.

The Hornsent consumes Bayle’s heart and the heart Florissax left
behind.

IV. Second Journey

She awakens to see Florissax standing vigil again. Her own skin
now dragonic but seemingly familiar, as though she has fought
hundreds of battles. She faintly remembers someone selling her a
concoction that puts even the oldest Dragons to sleep.

Florissax doesn’t remember her. Was this a dream? How is Bayle
still alive?

Again, the path is clear. Bayle is dead but something about
Florissax is off. She remembers the merchant’s concoction and
slips it to Florissax. Her lust for more power is overwhelming.

Now Florissax serves Vesperax.

V. What Remains

Newfound faith in true power enveloped Vesperax and her loyal
servant in radiant striations of red sparks, the peculiar weapon
alive with crimson crackle. The tower was hope. The lightning is
real.

Questline Connection

This is an NG+ build. Two journeys required. The items are split
across mutually exclusive quest paths.

Path A — Journey 1 (Heart + Gavel)

Reach the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion at Jagged Peak. Meet
Florissax. Do NOT give Thiollier’s Concoction. Defeat Bayle the
Dread. Return to the Grand Altar. Florissax is gone. Her spot is
empty. Two items remain on the stone — the Priestess Heart and
the Flowerstone Gavel. Take both.

Path B — Journey 2 (Dragonbolt + Spirit Ash)

Return to Jagged Peak in NG+. Florissax is back at the altar —
the cycle restored her. Obtain Thiollier’s Concoction from
Thiollier at Pillar Path Cross. Approach the altar at night. Give
Thiollier’s Concoction to Florissax. She drinks it and falls
unconscious. Wait two in-game days (rest at grace twice). She
wakes — lighter, the vigilance eased. Defeat Bayle the Dread.
Return to the Grand Altar. Florissax is still present. She gives
you Dragonbolt of Florissax. Confess that you gave her the
concoction. She pledges to follow you. Receive Ancient Dragon
Florissax spirit ash.

Supporting Quests

Ancient Dragon-Man must be defeated twice — once as an invasion
on the path to Dragon’s Pit, once as a boss inside Dragon’s Pit.
Lichdragon Fortissax must be defeated for Remembrance exchange
(Fortissax’s Lightning Spear, if included). Dragonkin Soldier of
Nokstella must be defeated for Frozen Lightning Spear.

The two-path structure is intentional. The build cannot exist
in a single playthrough. Vesperax’s story requires the cycle —
dying, returning, carrying what she learned forward. The
mechanics mirror the narrative.

Build Philosophy

Why Devotion Over Optimization?

Vesperax doesn’t wear armor because she can’t. The Priestess
Heart demands disrobed surrender. That’s not a build constraint —
that’s the character. She gave up protection to become something
closer to what Florissax was. The dragon form is the armor. The
red lightning is the weapon. The spirit ash fighting beside her
is the priestess who chose to stay.

Every piece of gear in this build comes from one questline or its
direct supporting content. The Gavel, the Heart, the Dragonbolt,
the spirit ash — all Florissax. The Gravel Stone Seal and Dragon
Cult spells are the infrastructure that makes the priestess’s
teachings functional. The talismans are survival tools that keep
an unarmored dragon mage alive long enough to cast.

The build could hit harder with Shard of Alexander. It could
survive longer with full armor and a greatshield. That’s a
different character. Vesperax is built around what she was given,
not what she could take.

“Devotion over optimization.”

“The Hornsent gave up her tower. Florissax gave up her body.
Neither of them got either back. They got each other instead.
And that was enough.”

Comparison to Previous Builds

Build Theme Weapon Type Combat Philosophy
Brynhildr Voss Habit Heavy STR Endure and overwhelm
Sister Veyra Corruption Faith Twinblade Aggressive faith melee
Aldwyn Defiance Thrusting Shield Guard counter and sustain loop
Akane Shadowreed Curse Bleed/Arcane Status application and burst
Vesperax Devotion Skill Vehicle + Casting Seal Burst mage with transformation mechanic — debuff, dump, reset

Every build in this series puts the character’s identity ahead of
the damage ceiling. Vesperax takes it further than most — she
gives up the option of armor entirely.
